Mystery Evening

About 12 members attended the ‘Mystery Evening’ on Friday 20th January.

We introduced ourselves and welcomed potential new member Oscar, originally from Latvia but now based in Bromley.

Ken and Gill had prepared an evening of identification for us to enjoy!

The ‘mystery’ was the ‘partefacts’, as Geoff described them, that were produced. Armed with various magnifying glasses and even a microscope we all tried to make a guess at what these ‘partefacts’ were.

Jen Jackson, the Kent FLO, armed with her knowledge also tried, along with the rest of us, to identify the metal oddments.

Conclusions were reached on a number of items:

Parts of guns both actual and toy.

Roman brooch or possibly brooches….

Spoon handles..

Tokens & foreign coins….

Furniture and horse harness fittings…

Pieces of buckle…

A Bronze Age item or was it a part of a cauldron leg?

and even part of a mangleworsel?

Andrew was heard to exclaim that this type of evening was definitely good for members new to detecting… but some of the items did have the more experienced members and the FLO stumped!

Although Jen’s get out was that any item was either a ‘fitting’ or was not 300 years old so therefore not in her remit…. try that one again Jen!
